“A beautiful 7-tier waterfall with the iconic 30-meter Maliwan cascade, prehistoric rock carvings, the striking red sandstone cliff of Pha Daeng, and peaceful forest camping areas”
Chat Trakan Waterfall National Park covers an area of approximately 339,375 rai across Chat Trakan and Nakhon Thai districts in Phitsanulok. Established as a national park on November 2, 1987, it is located about 145 kilometers from Phitsanulok city. The landscape features rugged mountain ranges and rich forest ecosystems.
The park’s main highlight is the Chat Trakan Waterfall, a magnificent 7-tier waterfall with each level uniquely named: Maliwan, Kannika, Karaket, Yisunthet, Kesmuang, Rueangyot, and Rojana.
-
Tier 1 “Maliwan” is the most impressive, with water cascading from a height_ of about 30 meters into a wide natural pool, suitable for swimming and relaxing by a sandy bank
-
Tiers 2–4 feature cascading streams over rocky ledges, with some areas suitable for light water activities
-
Tiers 5–7 are smaller and quieter, ideal for adventurous hikers seeking tranquility
Geologically, the park is dominated by sandstone formations rich in iron minerals, giving rise to the distinctive reddish-orange hues. This is especially visible at Pha Daeng (Red Cliff), located about 450 meters from Tier 4, offering panoramic views over the surrounding forest.
In addition to natural beauty, the park is also an important archaeological site, with prehistoric rock carvings discovered on cliff faces and boulders. These ancient markings, believed to be thousands of years old, indicate early human settlement in the area.
The park is also rich in biodiversity. During early winter (November–December), visitors can enjoy wildflowers and unique mushrooms along the nature trails, enhancing the hiking experience.
Popular activities include trekking through all 7 waterfall tiers, swimming in designated areas, exploring viewpoints, nature photography, and camping. The campsite near the park headquarters is, shaded, and ideal for enjoying morning mist and fresh mountain air.
