“Grand laterite stupa in Si Thep ancient town, a UNESCO World Heritage site reflecting stunning Dvaravati art.”

Wat Phra Kaeo is an important archaeological site within the ancient city of Si Thep, located within the Si Thep Historical Park in Si Thep District, Phetchabun Province. This ancient city is recognized as one of the most significant Dvaravati-era cultural centers in Thailand and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2023. Wat Phra Kaeo is situated almost in the center of the "inner city," reflecting the religious and ceremonial importance of the site in the past. The city plan and surrounding moats and earthen embankments demonstrate a systematic and complex urban planning typical of the Dvaravati period.

The most striking feature of Wat Phra Kaeo is its large main structure built of laterite and brick, standing on a raised rectangular base with stairs on all four sides. Around the site, traces of other smaller religious building foundations and structures have been found. Archaeologists hypothesize that the area was once a center for religious ceremonies and may have been used continuously over several periods, from the Dvaravati period (approximately the 12th–16th centuries CE) through the Lopburi period or later under the influence of ancient Khmer culture. This results in a diverse range of artistic styles and building materials found within the site, encompassing both Dvaravati art and architectural styles influenced by Khmer culture. Archaeological surveys and excavations by the Fine Arts Department have uncovered numerous artifacts within Wat Phra Kaew, including fragments of terracotta and sandstone Buddha images, stucco reliefs, ornaments, and various ancient architectural structures. This evidence reflects that the ancient city of Si Thep was once a large and prosperous community, flourishing in religion, trade, and culture. It also showed connections to important cities in the Chao Phraya River basin and ancient kingdoms in Southeast Asia.

The name "Wat Phra Kaew" (Temple of the Emerald Buddha) is not documented as its original ancient name, but rather a name passed down by locals. This is because Buddha images and sacred objects were discovered within the area in the past, suggesting it was once an important religious site of the ancient city of Si Thep. Currently, the area is continuously conserved and restored by the Fine Arts Department to preserve the ancient monument as close to its original form as possible. It is open to the public and tourists to study the ancient history and civilization of the upper central region of Thailand.

The atmosphere surrounding Wat Phra Kaew is peaceful and surrounded by the green spaces of the historical park. Tourists can closely examine the ancient walls, religious foundations, and various architectural ruins. Especially during the morning or evening when the soft sunlight illuminates the laterite surfaces in a beautiful orange-red hue, it provides a stunning visual experience. Ideal for photography and studying ancient art, the park also houses other important historical sites such as Khao Khlang Nai, Prang Si Thep, and an exhibition of artifacts, which help visitors gain a more comprehensive understanding of the past glory of Si Thep.
