“A vast natural pine forest on a peaceful ancient volcano, featuring a panoramic 360-degree viewpoint with spectacular eye-level vistas over endless rolling pine tree canopies.”
Phu Kum Khao Pine Forest is located within Nam Nao National Park, a large conservation area in the Phetchabun mountain range, averaging approximately 800 meters above sea level. This area features a complex mountainous landscape with dry evergreen forest, deciduous dipterocarp forest, montane evergreen forest, including "pine forests" and natural grasslands – unique to the high-altitude ecosystems of upper central and northeastern Thailand. Phu Kum Khao is considered one of the park's most important viewpoints.
The Phu Kum Khao Pine Forest is characterized by a "natural pine forest" interspersed with grasslands and open areas on the mountain ridges. This creates an open landscape where the rows of pine trees, swaying in the wind and mist, are clearly visible, especially during the winter months. The Nam Nao National Park as a whole comprises a mix of pine and mixed deciduous forests, forming part of a larger mountain forest ecosystem connected to the Phetchabun mountain range, which is the headwater source for several important river basins in northeastern Thailand.
A distinctive feature of Phu Kum Khao is its relatively cool climate throughout the year, particularly from November to February, when temperatures can drop significantly at night. Morning mist is common due to the high altitude and humidity from the surrounding forest, creating a striking image of a sea of fog covering the pine tree tops and grasslands. This is a characteristic feature of the highlands within Nam Nao National Park.
In terms of biodiversity, the area surrounding Phu Kum Khao Pine Forest is home to many species of wildlife naturally found in the park, such as barking deer, wild boar, wild birds, and other small animals. Nam Nao National Park is designated as a nationally important conservation area for its ecosystem and biodiversity. However, sightings of wildlife in this area depend on opportunity and timing; it is not a wildlife exhibition site.
Access to Phu Kum Khao requires using internal park roads, which are unpaved and natural trails, some of which may be rough. Generally, high-clearance vehicles or four-wheel drive vehicles are suitable. Compliance with national park regulations is essential as it is a conservation area, not a tourist area with complete facilities. Tourism here emphasizes nature, tranquility, and experiencing the actual ecosystem rather than comfort.
