“A stunningly wide waterfall cascading like a scenic curtain onto a unique natural sandy beach, surrounded by a peaceful and shady rainforest.”
Sai Thong Waterfall, located within Nam Nao National Park, is one of Phetchabun Province's most charming natural attractions. The waterfall cascades down a wide rock face, creating a beautiful white curtain of water amidst a lush, evergreen forest. The surrounding atmosphere is tranquil and highly natural, ideal for those seeking relaxation in the mountains and the refreshing waters of an important watershed in the northern and upper northeastern regions of Thailand.
A distinctive feature of Sai Thong Waterfall is the natural sandy area in front of the waterfall, formed by the accumulation of sand and seasonal sediments. This differs from most waterfalls which are usually surrounded only by rocks. When the water flows over the wide rock face during the rainy season, it spreads out into a large curtain, creating a beautiful spectacle and a cool, refreshing feeling. The sound of the waterfall echoing through the surrounding forest adds to the relaxing atmosphere for visitors. Some areas at the bottom are suitable for swimming, but caution is advised during the rainy season as water levels and currents can change rapidly.
The area around Sai Thong Waterfall is part of the evergreen and pine forest ecosystem of Nam Nao National Park, a highly abundant forest area and the source of several streams. The area boasts numerous native plant species, including ferns, mosses, and large trees that help maintain forest humidity throughout the year. In the mornings after rain, visitors may witness a thin layer of mist hovering over the waterfall, adding to the beauty of the surroundings. Additionally, the sounds of birds and the sight of small wild animals in their natural habitat make this area ideal for those who enjoy ecotourism and nature education.
Access to the waterfall requires a short hike along a nature trail from the park's parking area. The trail is mostly shady and covered with large trees. While not particularly difficult, some sections can be damp and slippery due to moss, especially during the rainy season. Therefore, visitors should wear appropriate hiking shoes. Upon reaching the waterfall, visitors will notice a distinctly cool and refreshing air, a stark contrast to the surrounding area, due to the dense forest and the constant humidity from the flowing water.
The best time to visit Sai Thong Waterfall is between the end of the rainy season and the beginning of winter, approximately October to January. This is when the water volume is high, the waterfall is beautiful, and the surrounding nature is lush and vibrant. The air in Nam Nao National Park during this period is pleasantly cool, especially in the mornings and evenings. Many visitors combine this visit with other significant attractions within the park, such as Pha Hua Sing viewpoint, Nam Nao Stargazing area, and the nature trail. This makes Sai Thong Waterfall another important destination for nature tourism in Phetchabun province, which still retains its tranquility and natural beauty very well.
