“Majestic bronze statues of two heroines stand at this historic roundabout. A symbol of courage and faith, it is an essential landmark for visitors to pay respects.”
Thao Thep Kasattri and Thao Sri Sunthon Monument is one of Phuket's most important historical symbols. It was erected to honor the bravery of "Khunying Chan" (Thao Thep Kasattri) and "Khunying Muk" (Thao Sri Sunthon), two sisters who played a crucial role in defending Thalang during the Burmese-Siamese wars of the late 18th century, particularly the significant event of 1785, the Nine Armies War, a major Burmese invasion of Siam.
This event occurred after the death of the city's ruler, leaving it without a leader. Khunying Chan and Khunying Muk took on the responsibility of leading the city's defense, working with villagers and local forces to organize defenses. They also employed psychological warfare strategies, such as having women dress as soldiers to mislead the enemy about their strength. This approach gave them a defensive advantage, allowing them to resist the Burmese army for approximately a month, eventually forcing the Burmese to withdraw from Thalang.
Following the war, King Rama I bestowed titles upon both sisters. The monument honors "Thao Thep Krasattri" and "Thao Sri Sunthorn" in recognition of their bravery and sacrifice in defending the Siamese kingdom. This is the highest honor reflecting the role of women in early Rattanakosin Thai military history.
Built in 1966, the monument is located at a roundabout on Thep Krasattri Road, a main route connecting Phuket Airport and Phuket town. The area surrounding the monument has been landscaped into a small park and has become a focal point for Phuket residents to pay homage and seek blessings. It also serves as a provincial symbol reflecting pride in the heroism of their ancestors.
Today, the monument is more than just a historical site; it's a significant landmark where Thai and international tourists visit to take photos and pay respects. Especially during important historical events in Phuket, commemorative ceremonies and cultural activities are regularly held.
