“ It is a sacred place associated with the Chao Pho Chao Fa Muang Mueang Shrine. Those who pay respect at the Chao Pho Chao Fa Muang Mueang Shrine will usually continue to pay respect at the Chao Mae Song Nang Phi Nong Shrine as well. ”

Chao Mae Song Nang Phi Nong Shrine  Mukdahan Province, is a sacred shrine located along the Mekong River on Saran Chai Khong Road, Nai Mueang Subdistrict, Mueang Mukdahan District. It is situated near the Indochina Market and the Mukdahan Immigration Checkpoint, an important area for trade, transportation, and riverside tourism. This shrine has long been revered by the people of Mukdahan. Originally, it was a small wooden shrine built by local villagers as a place to worship the sacred spirits of the Mekong River. During the era when the Mekong served as a major route for transportation and trade, the shrine functioned as a spiritual anchor, offering protection and safety for those traveling along the river. As the city of Mukdahan expanded and more people visited the area, the shrine was renovated and rebuilt into a more durable concrete structure to accommodate increasing numbers of worshippers and visitors. However, its original sacred location has been preserved in accordance with local beliefs.

According to local legend, Chao Mae Song Nang Phi Nong were the daughters of King Fa Ngum, the founder of the Lan Xang Kingdom. It is believed that during their journey along the Mekong River, they encountered a tragic boat accident that led to their passing in the area of present-day Mukdahan. After their death, their spirits were believed not to have disappeared, but instead to remain along the Mekong River as protective deities watching over travelers and riverside communities. This belief has become deeply rooted in local culture, making the shrine a spiritual center for the community. Locals, travelers, and merchants who use the Mekong route often visit to pray for safety, success in work, prosperity, and good fortune.Devotees typically offer flowers, incense, candles, garlands, and traditional three-colored cloth as offerings. Some also make vows when seeking help in important matters and return later to fulfill their vows once their wishes have been granted.

The shrine also plays an important role in local rituals and cultural traditions, especially the annual grand ceremony held on the 15th day of the 6th lunar month. This event includes offerings, traditional dance performances, and community ceremonies that reflect the beliefs, unity, and cultural identity of people living along the Mekong River.Today, Chao Mae Song Nang Phi Nong Shrine is not only a sacred place but also an important cultural tourism attraction in Mukdahan Province. Visitors come to pay respects for blessings and also enjoy the peaceful riverside scenery of the Mekong River. In addition, the shrine symbolizes the cultural connection between Thailand and Laos, as it is located in an area where the way of life on both sides of the Mekong River can be observed, making it not only a spiritual center but also a representation of strong cross-border cultural ties among riverside communities.
