“ An octagonal tower standing 65.5 meters high with a 360-degree observation deck overlooking the Mekong River, Mukdahan City, and Savannakhet in Laos. ”

Ho Kaeo Mukdahan Jubilee Tower (Ho Kaeo Mukdahan) is one of the most iconic landmarks in Mukdahan Province and among the most famous Mekong River viewpoints in Northeastern Thailand. Located along the Mekong River on Chayangkun Road, near the Indochina Market and the riverside tourism district, the tower offers spectacular panoramic views of Mukdahan City, the Second Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge, and Savannakhet Province in Laos. It has become both a symbolic representation of Mukdahan and a must-visit destination for travelers exploring the Mekong region.

The tower was constructed in 1995 to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX), celebrating the 50th anniversary of his reign. The project was funded by the Mukdahan Municipality together with local community support, aiming to create a monument of loyalty, a cultural learning center, and a major viewpoint overlooking the Mekong River basin.

Architecture and Symbolic Meaning

One of the tower’s most distinctive features is its octagonal architectural design standing 65.5 meters tall, equivalent to a 15-story building. The design was inspired by the legendary “Mukdahan Crystal Ball”, a sacred symbol associated with prosperity and good fortune for the province.

The structure combines modern architectural elements with traditional Northeastern Thai artistic influences. Its elegant riverside silhouette has become one of Mukdahan’s most recognizable images and frequently appears in tourism promotions for the province.

Inside Ho Kaeo Mukdahan

The interior of the tower is divided into several levels, each featuring exhibitions related to history, culture, religion, and scenic observation areas.

Cultural and Historical Exhibition Floors

The lower floors showcase exhibitions about the history of Mukdahan, the lifestyle of Mekong riverside communities, and the traditions of the province’s eight ethnic groups, including:

  • Thai Isan
  • Thai Yo
  • Thai Phu Tai
  • Thai Kaleung
  • Thai Saek
  • Thai Kula
  • Thai Kha
  • Thai So

Visitors can explore displays of traditional textiles, silverware, folk musical instruments, ancient household tools, historical photographs, and rare artifacts reflecting the prosperity of Mekong trade communities in the past. These exhibitions provide deep insight into the cultural identity of Mukdahan and Northeastern Thailand.

Sacred Religious Area

The upper section of the tower houses important sacred objects, including:

  • Phra Phuttha Nawaming Mongkhon Mukdahan, the province’s revered Buddha image
  • The symbolic Mukdahan Crystal Ball, representing prosperity and auspiciousness

Both locals and visitors often come here to pay respect and pray for blessings and good fortune.

360-Degree Mekong River Viewpoint

The tower’s main highlight is located on the 6th and 7th floors, where a circular glass observation deck provides breathtaking 360-degree panoramic views over the Mekong River, Mukdahan City, the Second Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge, and Savannakhet in Laos.

On clear days, visitors can see distant mountain ranges and riverside communities stretching along the Mekong. During the cool season, visibility is especially impressive, and morning mist over the river creates a beautiful atmosphere.

Best Time to Visit for Scenic Views

  • Morning: Ideal for misty Mekong River scenery and peaceful surroundings
  • Late Afternoon: Perfect for sunset photography and golden reflections on the river
  • Evening: Enjoy sparkling city lights and illuminated bridge views

The Golden Hour before sunset is considered the most popular time for photography enthusiasts.
