“Wat Chom Thong is famous for its large Buddha statue, or "Luang Pho To," which stands on the mountaintop and is visible from a distance. It's also one of the "Four Mountaintop Pagodas" (Phra That Si Chom) revered by the local people and one of the most beautiful spots in the district to watch the sunset.”
Wat Chom Thong (Wat Chom Thong), also known locally as Wat Phra That Chom Thong, is one of the most significant Buddhist sites in Mae Sariang, Mae Hong Son Province. It's part of a group of guardian pagodas known as the "Four Mountaintop Pagodas," believed to have protected the town since ancient times.
The temple is situated on a high hill to the east of Mae Sariang town. Its most striking feature is the large Maravichai Buddha statue, affectionately called "Luang Pho To" by the locals. Built with brick and plaster, this elegant statue stands majestically on the temple's upper platform.
Besides its religious importance, Wat Chom Thong serves as an excellent viewpoint. From the platform of the Luang Pho To statue, you can see a clear panoramic view of Mae Sariang town, including houses nestled in the valley and the beautiful expanse of rice fields. A visit in the evening to watch the sunset over the hills is a truly impressive and unmissable experience.
The temple's history is linked to the Tai Yai people. The smaller pagoda within the temple was built in 1893 and features a mix of Burmese and local art styles. It's a perfect place to pay respects for good fortune and to soak in the beauty of the local culture and nature.
