Wat Saen Thong is an ancient and historically significant temple that serves as the spiritual center for the people of Mae Sariang district, Mae Hong Son province. It was founded in 1793, making it one of the oldest temples in the area.

According to local legend, the temple was once called 'Wat Lum' (the lower temple). It was later renamed Wat Saen Thong after 'Phra Saen Thong,' a revered Buddha image that was originally at Wat Thung Laeng. When a flood submerged that temple, locals managed to retrieve only this one statue and enshrined it at this location, leading to the establishment of Wat Saen Thong.

In addition to Phra Saen Thong, a bronze Buddha image in the subduing Mara posture from the Chiang Saen period, the temple also houses 'Phra Phet' or 'Phra Sing Neung.' This is a Phra Phuttha Sihing-style statue believed to be highly sacred and capable of bringing rain, earning it great reverence from the community.

During the Songkran festival (Thai New Year), the temple holds a procession to parade both sacred Buddha images around the town, allowing locals to anoint them with water and pay their respects. This long-standing tradition draws many tourists who come to experience the beautiful culture of the community.
