“Wat Sri Bun Rueang has a history spanning over a hundred years, notable for its beautiful Shan-Burmese-style viharn and housing the largest white jade Buddha statue in Thailand.”

Wat Sri Bun Rueang (Wat Sri Bun Rueang) is located in the heart of Mae Sariang district, Mae Hong Son province. It is a place of great historical and cultural significance for the local Shan (Tai Yai) people.

The temple has a long history, founded around 1907. It was originally named "Wat Mak Kaeng" because of a large tamarind tree (mak kaeng) within the compound. In 1947, its name was changed to Wat Sri Bun Rueang, and it has been an integral part of the Mae Sariang community's way of life ever since.

Over time, it has been renovated and developed to preserve its cultural and spiritual value. The main hall, in particular, is built in a beautiful Burmese artistic style with intricate carvings. Inside, it enshrines a magnificent white jade Buddha statue, which was carved in Mandalay, Myanmar. It is considered the largest jade Buddha statue in Thailand, created to honor the late King Rama IX on the occasion of his long reign.

During special festivals or seasons, the temple hosts events and activities that attract many visitors. These include the Poy Sang Long festival, a colorful and grand novice ordination ceremony for the Shan people, and the Ok Phansa festival, during which the temple is decorated with an array of vibrant lanterns.

This temple is therefore a perfect destination for those interested in studying the history and art of the Shan people, as well as for those who wish to experience the unique local traditions up close.

If you want to experience and learn about the precious culture of the Shan people, Wat Sri Bun Rueang is a place you should not miss.
