“ Wat Mahathat (Royal Monastery) An ancient temple of Yasothon, home to Phra That Anon, Phra Kaew Khao, and a beautiful Isan-style scripture hall over water. ”

Wat Mahathat is one of the most important royal temples in Yasothon Province and has long served as the spiritual, cultural, and historical heart of the city. The area was once known as “Ban Sing Tha,” an old riverside community along the Thuan River that later developed into present-day Yasothon. For generations, the temple has played a central role in important religious ceremonies and community traditions. The temple’s most sacred landmark is “Phra That Anon,” a revered stupa believed to enshrine relics of Phra Ananda, the Buddha’s closest disciple and personal attendant. According to local legend, the relics were brought to this site centuries ago, making it the only Phra Ananda relic stupa in Thailand. Because of this, the stupa holds deep spiritual significance for Buddhists throughout northeastern Thailand.Architecturally, Phra That Anon is highly distinctive compared to other Thai stupas. The structure features a square base in Lan Xang style combined with traditional Isan artistic influences and rises approximately 25 meters high. Its layered lotus-bud spire reflects ancient Lao architectural traditions once widespread across the Mekong region. Decorative stucco motifs and recessed niches around the stupa further showcase the refined craftsmanship of local artisans from earlier generations.

Inside the ordination hall stands “Phra Phuttha Butsayarat,” widely known among locals as “Phra Kaew Khao.” This highly revered Buddha image is regarded as the spiritual symbol of Yasothon Province. The statue displays graceful Lan Xang artistic characteristics, with a serene facial expression and elegant proportions. Local people believe that paying respect to the image brings blessings and good fortune, especially during important merit-making festivals held throughout the year.Another culturally valuable structure within the temple grounds is the ancient scripture hall built over water. The building was intentionally separated from the ground to protect sacred palm-leaf manuscripts and Buddhist scriptures from termites and insects. The wooden structure contains beautifully detailed Thai-Lao carvings, including naga motifs, floral patterns, and vine designs that reflect the wisdom and artistic heritage of traditional Isan craftsmen.

The atmosphere inside the temple remains peaceful and shaded, preserving the charm of Yasothon’s old-town heritage. Visitors can enjoy walking around the stupa, scripture hall, and historic buildings, particularly during the early morning or late afternoon when soft sunlight enhances the golden tones and architectural details of the sacred structures. Wat Mahathat is also closely connected to Yasothon’s famous Bun Bang Fai Rocket Festival, one of the region’s most important cultural celebrations reflecting the vibrant traditions and lifestyle of the Isan people.
