“Experience the lively post-war charm of Old Tokyo with street food, bargain shopping, and a fun, chaotic market atmosphere.”
Ameya Yokocho Market — commonly called Ameyoko — is a bustling open-air market street located between Ueno Station and Okachimachi Station, running parallel to the Yamanote Line tracks. It stretches for about 350 meters, roughly a 5-minute walk from Ueno Station, covering a total area of 15,257 square meters. The market begins behind the Yodobashi Camera building and continues south along the railway until the Komuro Building.
The origin of the name “Ameyoko” is linked to two main theories. The first is that it’s an abbreviation of “Ameya Yokocho,” meaning “Candy Store Alley,” reflecting the market’s early post-war days when merchants sold sweets and simple foods during a time when sugar was scarce. The second theory suggests that “Ame” refers to “America,” since the market once served as a post–World War II black market where American goods were commonly traded.
Today, Ameyoko has evolved into one of Tokyo’s most vibrant and characteristic market streets, home to over 250 shops offering a diverse mix of products — from clothing, bags, and cosmetics to fresh seafood, dried foods, nuts, and spices. The energetic calls of shopkeepers, the constant hum of shoppers, and the unique blend of old-school charm and modern-day bargains create an atmosphere that captures the essence of Old Tokyo.
In addition to shopping, visitors can indulge in delicious street food, such as seafood rice bowls (kaisendon), sushi, and the famous Menchi Katsu from Niku no Ooyama, a long-standing butcher shop. For souvenir hunters, Niki no Kashi offers discounted Japanese snacks in bulk — perfect for gifts. Whether you come to eat, shop, or simply soak in the nostalgic ambiance, Ameyoko remains a must-visit destination that truly embodies Tokyo’s lively street culture.
