Ameyoko is a bustling market street located between Okachimachi and Ueno stations, running alongside the Yamanote Line tracks. It take about 350 meters away or 5 minutes' walk from Ueno station.
The market is 15,257 sqm in total area, starting behind the Yodobashi Camera building and along the Yamanote Line south untill the Komuro building.
There are two theories of its name "Ameyoko". One is a shortened form of "Ameya Yokocho," which means "candy store alley" due to its history of selling candies in the early post-war period when sugar was hard to come by.
Alternatively, "Ame" also represents "America" because the street used to host a black market after World War 2, where many American products were available.
Presently, Ameyoko is home to over 250 shops, offering a wide range of goods for sale, including clothing, bags, cosmetics, fresh fish, dried foods, and spices. It has evolved into a vibrant market where visitors can find various products to suit their needs.
