“A sacred laterite pillar located by the Mae Klong River within the military camp, featuring exquisite Thai architecture. It is a spiritual center for career blessings.”
City Pillar Shrine Ratchaburi is a spiritual center for the people of Ratchaburi and is considered one of the most historically significant sacred sites in the Mae Klong River basin. Located within the Phanu Rangsi Military Camp, the former headquarters of the Royal Thai Army Engineering Department, the shrine stands out from other city pillar shrines in Thailand due to its location within a military area. Despite its location, it remains open to the public for worship year-round.
Historically, Ratchaburi is an important ancient city dating back to the Ayutthaya period. The city center was moved to the east bank of the Mae Klong River during the reign of King Rama II (Phra Phutthaloetla Naphalai), a move that coincided with the establishment of a new city pillar for auspiciousness and as a focal point of public faith. Therefore, the Ratchaburi city pillar is more deeply connected to the city's development than simply being a religious structure.
The current city pillar shrine is a renovated and improved building, designed to accommodate public worship. Inside is the city pillar, a symbol representing the city's central axis, believed to be a sacred object protecting the city and its people. The pillar is beautifully adorned within an intricately designed Thai-style pavilion. Reflecting the unique artistic identity of Thailand and the faith of the local people.
The area surrounding the shrine is within a lush and well-organized military camp, creating a peaceful atmosphere suitable for worship and relaxation. Locals from Ratchaburi and tourists often visit to pray for success in their careers, life stability, and safety. Furthermore, it clearly reflects the connection between the history of the city's founding, military history, and the traditional beliefs of the local community.
