“Admire the massive golden Prang atop the hill, breathe fresh air, and enjoy 360-degree panoramic views of Ratchaburi city and the scenic Tanaosri mountains.”
Khao Wang, also known as Wat Khao Wang, is a significant religious site and viewpoint in Ratchaburi Province. Located on Khao Sattanat (or Khao Wang) hill within the Ratchaburi municipal area, this hill rises approximately 44 meters above the surrounding land and is only a few kilometers from the city center, making it easily accessible and a popular resting place for both locals and tourists.
Historically, the Khao Wang area has a long history. It was once the site of an ancient temple and religious community. Records indicate that during the reign of King Rama V, King Chulalongkorn considered developing and using the hill to build a small palace during his visit to Ratchaburi. However, he only stayed there once before the land was no longer used as a palace and gradually transformed into a religious site and temple.
Today, Khao Wang is home to Wat Khao Wang, a third-class royal temple of the Mahayana Buddhist sect. The temple plays a crucial role in both religious and cultural tourism. Within the temple are important historical sites, including the main chapel, Buddha statues, and a pagoda, as well as architecture that blends Rattanakosin-era Thai art with the systematic arrangement of the hilltop, creating a peaceful and serene atmosphere. The most striking feature of Khao Wang is its panoramic view. Tourists can see almost the entire city of Ratchaburi, as well as the surrounding mountain range, especially during sunrise and sunset, which are the most popular times to visit. In addition, the area is home to wild monkeys, so visitors should be mindful of their belongings and food.
Today, Khao Wang remains an important site for religious purposes, meditation, and cultural tourism. It continues to attract tourists and Buddhists alike. Accessible to the summit via a concrete road from the base, it's a short drive from Ratchaburi city, making it one of the province's key landmarks.
How to Get There
- From Ratchaburi city center, take Chedi Hak Road heading west for about 2 kilometers. The entrance to Khao Wang will be on your left. Cars can easily drive up to the summit.
