“Marvel at Dvaravati-era cliff carvings, walk the scenic boardwalk through limestone valleys and lakes, and enjoy unique landscapes perfect for relaxing and capturing stunning photos.”
Khao Ngu Rishi Cave is part of Khao Ngu Stone Park, located in a natural limestone mountain range in Ratchaburi Province. This area has a long history of land use dating back to the quarrying era before being developed into a natural and historical tourist attraction. The landscape consists of limestone mountains with geological ages dating back hundreds of millions of years, formed by the accumulation of ancient marine sediments that were later uplifted, resulting in numerous cliffs, caves, and rock cavities within the same area.
Inside Khao Ngu Rishi Cave, significant artistic and archaeological evidence has been found, particularly Buddha images carved on the cave walls and rocks. Scholars classify these as belonging to the Dvaravati period, characterized by a simple style of the Buddha in the posture of granting Dharma, reflecting the early Buddhist beliefs spreading in central Thailand. This evidence confirms that Khao Ngu was once a religious site or a place of Buddhist activity in the past, approximately between the 11th and 16th centuries CE.
Other caves surrounding the cave have also been discovered with carvings and evidence of past use, such as caves containing carvings of various Buddha images and traces of rock excavation, reflecting that the area was both a religious site and a natural resource area simultaneously. After quarrying ceased, the area was rehabilitated by government agencies and transformed into a public park to preserve the limestone landscape and cultural heritage.
Today, Tham Rue Si Khao Ngou (Hermit's Cave at Khao Ngou) is part of a tourist attraction that blends nature and history. Visitors can walk along a nature trail on a wooden boardwalk floating above the water, admire the limestone mountains reflected in the reservoir, and study the archaeological traces still visible within the cave. The area is therefore valuable in terms of geology, history, and ecotourism.
