“Kad Thung Kwian is a famous souvenir market in Lampang, offering authentic Northern Thai food, seasonal wild ingredients, local herbs, OTOP products, and local handicrafts, all within a bustling local market atmosphere along the Lampang–Chiang Mai route.”
Kad Thung Kwian Market, also known as Thung Kwian Market, is a famous market located along the Lampang–Chiang Mai highway in Hang Chat District, Lampang Province. It is considered one of the most popular rest stops for travelers passing through the northern route and a major tourist attraction of Lampang that has been renowned for a long time.
In the past, this market started from small roadside shops where villagers brought forest products to sell, such as wild meats, local wild animals like lizards, as well as herbs and various wild plants. Most of the shops in the past were just small wooden shacks lined up along the road to sell products to passing travelers.
As time passed, Thung Kwian Market gained popularity and gradually developed into a larger and more organized market, becoming a center for souvenirs from Lampang and northern Thailand. There is a wide variety of local products, handicrafts, and local food such as crispy pork rinds, Nam Prik Noom, Sai Oua, pickled food, and Lanna-style local dishes that tourists can choose from as souvenirs.
Although this market used to be famous for selling wild food, nowadays, shops selling wild food have decreased significantly over time, with only a few remaining, such as the wild boar shop, which is popular among tourists. Some shops also offer a service to pack the food in foam boxes so that it can be easily taken back as a souvenir.
Currently, Kad Thung Kwian has become a large souvenir market with complete facilities, including a large parking lot, a food court, many shops, and clean restrooms, accommodating both private cars and tour buses, allowing travelers to stop, taste local food, and buy souvenirs conveniently.
With the lively atmosphere of a local market combined with the uniqueness of Northern Thai food and local products, Kad Thung Kwian is one of the most famous souvenir markets in Lampang and an important stop for tourists traveling between Lampang and Chiang Mai.
