“Admire the seven-tiered golden teakwood viharn (Jong) adorned with rare Burmese-style metal fretwork, pay respect to the golden Burmese-style pagoda enshrining sacred relics, and experience authentic Burmese Buddhist art in a peaceful temple setting.”

Wat Pa Fang, officially known as Wat Satsanachotikaram (formerly Wat Jong Kha), was established around 1892 during the reign of King Rama V. It was founded by Burmese settlers, notably U Yo, a wealthy timber merchant who prospered from teak concessions in Lampang in partnership with British companies. At that time, teak was considered the “gold of Lanna,” and Lampang became a major logging hub. The Burmese community built this temple as a spiritual center and a symbol of their faith and prosperity.

The Golden Pagoda and Sacred Relics

Behind the viharn stands a striking golden Burmese-style bell-shaped pagoda that enshrines sacred Buddha relics brought from Myanmar around 1906. The pagoda’s radiant gold surface contrasts beautifully with the dark teakwood structures. Around its base are niches containing Buddha images and mythical Himmapan creatures reflecting traditional Burmese beliefs.

Teakwood Viharn (Jong) and Ordination Hall

The architectural highlight is the large all-teakwood viharn, known as a “Jong,” which combines both the sermon hall and monks’ quarters in one structure. Its seven-tiered roof (Pyatthat style) symbolizes a celestial palace and showcases intricate craftsmanship. The roof edges are decorated with delicate perforated metal sheets and carved wooden vine motifs.

The temple also features a small ordination hall (ubosot) with a Burmese-style wooden roof and elegant stucco vine patterns above the entrance, reflecting refined Burmese artistry blended with deep religious devotion.

Religious and Cultural Significance

Wat Pa Fang has long maintained close ties with the Burmese monastic tradition. In the past, monks from Mandalay frequently served as abbots, helping preserve authentic Burmese Buddhist practices.

Despite its central location in Lampang city, the temple remains tranquil and shaded by large trees, offering visitors a peaceful retreat and a meaningful glimpse into the cross-cultural heritage shaped by the teak trade era.
