“Experience one of Thailand’s largest open-pit coal mines from scenic viewpoints, enjoy the Mae Moh Botanical Garden and grass slider activities, and admire the golden blooming Mexican sunflowers covering the valley during winter.”
Mae Moh Lignite Mine is one of Thailand’s most important energy sources located in Mae Moh, Lampang. The lignite deposit was first discovered in 1917 and is estimated to contain about 630 million tons of coal reserves. Geological studies suggest that the coal deposits are approximately 40 million years old. The entire mining area covers about 20,000 rai, originally under the management of the Royal Forest Department, and it is expected to support energy production for several more decades.
The coal found here is lignite, a type of brown coal used as the primary fuel for the Mae Moh Power Plant, which operates multiple generating units within the same area. The power plant has long played a crucial role in supplying electricity to the northern and central regions of Thailand, making Mae Moh one of the country’s key energy hubs.
The mine itself is a massive open-pit mining site, where large-scale machinery and blasting techniques are used to extract coal. For safety reasons, tourists are not allowed to enter the excavation area. However, EGAT has created a designated Mae Moh Mine Viewpoint where visitors can safely observe the mining landscape.
The viewpoint area has been beautifully landscaped into a garden and recreational park, decorated with colorful flowers and ornamental plants. From here, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the enormous mining pit while watching the operation of giant excavators and mining trucks working deep inside the valley.
Another major attraction within the area is the Mae Moh Botanical Garden, which was developed from former soil dumping grounds of the mine. The area has been rehabilitated into a large green park with walking paths, scenic lawns, and a popular grass slider activity that is especially fun for families and children.
During late autumn and early winter, the surrounding hills become covered with blooming Mexican sunflowers (Bua Tong), turning the valley into a spectacular golden landscape. This seasonal flower field is considered one of the most beautiful places to see Mexican sunflowers in northern Thailand without traveling as far as Mae Hong Son.
Visitors can also explore the Lignite Coal Learning Center Museum, which presents educational exhibitions about coal formation, geology, mining technology, and electricity generation. Through interactive displays and modern multimedia presentations, the museum provides valuable insights into Thailand’s energy resources and the role of Mae Moh in the national power system.
