“Behold the sacred stone pedestal simulating Buddha's passing, surrounded by ancient Shorea trees and historic temples in a serene, lush forest park of Kanchanaburi.”

Phra Thaen Dong Rang Forest Park is a significant historical, religious, and natural tourist attraction in Kanchanaburi Province. Located within the Phra Thaen Dong Rang National Forest Reserve in Tha Maka District, this area has long been renowned as a sacred site associated with Buddhism. The "Phra Thaen," or large stone platform, is the center of faith. According to legends and beliefs passed down since the Ayutthaya period, this place is believed to be a site commemorating the Buddha's passing into Nirvana. Therefore, it has become an important destination for Buddhists who come to worship throughout the year, especially during the Phra Thaen Dong Rang Worship Festival, held on the 15th day of the 4th lunar month every year – a significant tradition for the people of Kanchanaburi.

The forest park, covering over 1,300 rai (approximately 2,300 hectares), consists of well-preserved dry dipterocarp and mixed deciduous forests. It was declared a forest park in 1982 by the Royal Forest Department. The forest contains numerous native tree species such as Dipterocarpus obtusifolius, Shorea robusta, Lagerstroemia speciosa, Afzelia xylocarpa, and various medicinal plants, creating a peaceful, shady, and serene atmosphere ideal for studying the natural ecosystem. Furthermore, small wild animals and local birds inhabit the area naturally. Therefore, it serves as both a pilgrimage site and an environmental learning center in the western region of Thailand.

The most important feature of this place is the Phra Thaen Vihara, which houses a large stone platform resembling a stone bed. It is gilded and draped in yellow cloth according to long-standing tradition. Historians believe that the sacredness of Phra Thaen Dong Rang was widely mentioned during the late Ayutthaya period and appears in literary works, travelogues, and records of important figures from various eras, including the royal writings of King Rama V, which describe the area, the vihara, and the cremation hill in detail. This shows that Phra Thaen Dong Rang has been an important religious site and a destination since ancient times.

In addition to the Phra Thaen Vihara, the area contains several other ancient sites and points related to Buddhist history, such as Khao Thawai Phra Phloeng (Cremation Hill), located on a hill approximately 55 meters high. Inside is a twelve-sided pavilion enshrining a replica of the Buddha's footprint. Tourists can hike up to enjoy the surrounding views of the forest and nearby communities. There is also a spot called "Bo Buan Phra Oth" (the Buddha's Mouth Washing Well), which is part of local legends and beliefs, as well as an old vihara, a rest pavilion, and areas for religious activities. The atmosphere of the forest park is one of tranquility, sacredness, and cultural values seamlessly integrated with nature.

Today, Phra Thaen Dong Rang Forest Park remains an important tourist destination in Kanchanaburi Province, encompassing religious, historical, and ecotourism aspects. Most tourists visit to pay homage to the sacred shrine, seek blessings, and relax amidst the peaceful natural surroundings. This is especially true during the dry season, from February to April, when the Sal trees bloom with pale yellow flowers throughout the forest, creating a beautiful and unique atmosphere compared to other tourist attractions in Kanchanaburi. With its significant religious and historical values, and well-preserved ecosystem, Phra Thaen Dong Rang Forest Park clearly reflects the close relationship between Buddhism, Thai way of life, and nature.
