“A spectacular natural landmark formed by the eruption of Mount Nantai, renowned for its stunning waterfront vistas and ranked as one of Japan's top spots for autumn foliage.”
Lake Chuzenji is situated at an altitude of approximately 1,269 meters above sea level within Nikko National Park, making it the highest natural lake in Japan (among lakes of significant size). It was formed about 20,000 years ago when the eruption of Mount Nantai blocked the valley below, creating a massive basin with a circumference of 25 kilometers, surrounded by a complex and beautiful mountain landscape.
A unique feature of the lake is that it serves as the source for Kegon Falls, one of Japan’s three most beautiful waterfalls. Beyond its natural splendor, the lakeside area has been a celebrated international summer resort since the Meiji period. Various nations, including Italy and Great Britain, established summer embassies here to enjoy the cool year-round climate and the distinct blend of Western and Japanese cultures.
Visitors can experience a different atmosphere in every season, but it is particularly famous during the autumn season when the surrounding forests turn vibrant shades of orange, red, and yellow, contrasting sharply with the deep blue water. Popular activities include sightseeing cruises to view the scenery from the middle of the lake or taking a peaceful stroll along the shore to feel the cool breeze and admire the mountain reflections.
