“Two spectacular wisteria tunnels measuring 80 and 220 meters, featuring over 22 varieties of cascading wisteria in stunning gradients of purple, white, and pink.”

Kawachi Wisteria Garden is a privately owned garden located on a quiet hillside in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture. Internationally recognized and selected by CNN as one of “Japan’s 31 Most Beautiful Places,” the garden is best known for its iconic wisteria tunnels, stretching 80 meters and 220 meters in length. During peak bloom, thousands of wisteria blossoms drape gracefully overhead, creating a dreamlike, immersive floral corridor.

Beyond the tunnels, the garden features an expansive wisteria trellis area covering more than 3,300 square meters, as well as a floral dome where visitors can stand beneath a fragrant cascade of flowers. The best time to visit is from late April to early May, often coinciding with Japan’s Golden Week, when the flowers are at their most vibrant.

The garden also opens in autumn, from mid-November to early December, offering a contrasting seasonal experience with over 700 maple trees turning brilliant shades of red and orange across the valley. Founded by Masao Higuchi, who planted the first wisteria in 1968, the garden remains lovingly maintained by the Higuchi family to this day.
