“Admire the beauty of Huai Huat Reservoir, with its crystal-clear water year-round, amidst lush forests. A highlight is the "prehistoric rock paintings" on the cliff face, along with a viewpoint offering expansive panoramic views and one of the most scenic riverside campsites in the province.”

Phu Pha Yon National Park, formerly known as Huai Huat National Park, is a vital conservation area nestled within the Phu Phan Mountain Range. The park’s geography is characterized by expansive high plateaus and complex sandstone mountain structures. The journey typically begins at the "Huai Huat Reservoir," a large-scale water resource developed under a royal initiative. Beyond its utility for local agriculture, the reservoir has become a premier destination for travelers due to its serene, mirror-like waters that reflect the lush surrounding forest, offering a tranquil escape for nature lovers.

Deep within the forest lies the park’s namesake, "Phu Pha Yon," a majestic sandstone cliff of immense historical and archaeological significance. It is home to ancient rock carvings estimated to be over 3,000 years old. These petroglyphs offer a rare glimpse into the lives of prehistoric humans, featuring intricate depictions of animals, geometric patterns, and cryptic symbols etched into the stone. Not far from this site, visitors can explore "Kham Nam Sang Waterfall," a stunning cascade that drops from a high cliff, and "Lan Dusita," a vast rocky plain that transforms into a vibrant wildflower meadow during the transition from the rainy season to winter. During this time, rare insectivorous plants like Dusita, Soi Suwanna, and Thip Kesorn bloom in abundance, carpeting the landscape in brilliant hues.

For adventure enthusiasts, the park offers diverse trekking trails through deciduous dipterocarp and dry evergreen forests, which serve as a sanctuary for various wildlife species and rare flora. Camping by the reservoir is a highlight, especially during the cool season when a thin veil of mist dances across the water's surface at dawn, and the night sky reveals a breathtaking canopy of stars undisturbed by light pollution. Whether you are seeking a peaceful retreat, a historical exploration, or an ecological classroom, Phu Pha Yon National Park stands as one of the most comprehensive and enchanting natural landmarks in Northeastern Thailand.

How to Get There
  • From Sakon Nakhon city, take Highway 223 (Sakon Nakhon-That Phanom) for approximately 14 kilometers, then turn right onto Highway 2330 towards Taeng Ngoy District and continue to the national park following the signs. The total distance from the city is approximately 35 kilometers.

Travel Tips
  • Recommend visiting between November and January, which is winter. The weather is cool and comfortable, and there's a chance to see mist over the reservoir in the early morning.

  • For camping enthusiasts, campsites by the river fill up very quickly during long weekends or holidays. It's advisable to book in advance through the National Park Department's system or call park officials before your trip.

  • Because it's a forested area near a water source, there may be gnats or mosquitoes in the evenings. Bring insect repellent spray or mosquito coils.

  • When hiking to the Phu Pha Yon ancient rock painting site, wear sturdy hiking boots or shoes with good grip, as some sections are rocky and steep.

  • As this is a conservation-focused national park, bring your own trash bags to dispose of waste at designated areas and avoid using styrofoam or single-use plastics.

  • After 10 PM, please keep noise levels down to avoid disturbing other tourists and wildlife.

  • There is a convenience store at the park headquarters, but it closes in the evening. It's recommended to bring fresh or dry food if you plan to cook your own meals (picnic gas stoves are allowed, but open fires on the grass are prohibited).
