“Worship the 4th Phra Buddha Sihing (Luang Pho Samrit) in Thailand, admire the ornate wooden gables of the ancient Ayutthaya-style chapel, and view historical artifacts from the era of Phanthai Norasing.”

Khok Kham Temple is an ancient community temple with a long and significant history, established around 1679 during the reign of King Suea of the Ayutthaya Kingdom. The temple is located along Khok Kham Canal, which once served as an important transportation route connecting the Tha Chin River with the coastal areas. For centuries, the temple has functioned not only as a spiritual center for the local community but also as a resting point for travelers navigating the waterways. Today, Khok Kham Temple remains an important repository of art and archaeology that clearly reflects the prosperity of late Ayutthaya-period architecture.

The most important highlight of the temple is Phra Phuttha Sihing, also known as Luang Pho Samrit, a bronze Buddha image in the Subduing Mara posture, crafted in early Chiang Saen artistic style. It is believed to be the fourth Phra Phuttha Sihing in Thailand, apart from those enshrined in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Nakhon Si Thammarat. Local devotees respectfully call the image “Luang Pho Samrit,” believing that prayers made here often lead to success in career, business, and family life.

Another architectural highlight is the old ordination hall, or Maha-Ut Ubosot, which features only a single entrance and exit in accordance with ancient beliefs. The structure clearly displays Ayutthaya-style characteristics, including a curved base resembling the hull of a Chinese junk. The wooden gable is intricately carved with an image of Vishnu riding Garuda, retaining its elegance despite being over 300 years old. Surrounding the ordination hall are paired red sandstone boundary stones, a rare feature seldom seen today.

In front of the ordination hall stands an Ayutthaya-style chedi, which, although restored in later periods, still preserves its original form and proportions. The temple also houses historical artifacts related to the legend of Phanthai Norasing, as Khok Kham Canal is associated with the famous historical incident. These artifacts include wooden fragments believed to be part of the Ekachai Royal Barge and an original shrine constructed during the Ayutthaya era.

The overall atmosphere of Khok Kham Temple is peaceful and shaded, making it ideal for visitors seeking historical exploration, merit-making, and quiet reflection away from crowded tourist areas. Each year, during February or March, the temple hosts the annual gilding ceremony of Luang Pho Samrit, a major religious festival that attracts devoted worshippers from Samut Sakhon and nearby provinces.
