“Pay respects to the sacred City Pillar God by the Tha Chin River, admire applied Chinese architectural beauty, and experience the profound faith of the local fishing community.”

City Pillar Shrine Samut Sakhon is a sacred landmark and spiritual symbol of the city, deeply revered by the people of Maha Chai and Samut Sakhon Province. It holds particular importance for local fishermen, who traditionally come to pray for safe journeys, abundant catches, and success before heading out to sea. The shrine is located near Wichian Chodok Fort, a historic site that reflects the close connection between local history, coastal livelihoods, and long-standing spiritual beliefs passed down through generations.

The shrine’s architecture is distinguished by its refined Chinese-influenced design, rich in intricate details. The structure is adorned with colorful stucco reliefs of dragons, deities, and auspicious symbols that contrast beautifully with the elegant form of the shrine. Inside, the sacred spirit of Chao Pho Lak Mueang is enshrined in a figure carved from auspicious wood, renowned for granting blessings related to fortune, career success, prosperity, and protection. As a result, devotees visit the shrine continuously throughout the day.

The surrounding atmosphere is enhanced by the shrine’s location along the Tha Chin River, where gentle river breezes create a refreshing environment and offer close views of the river and the daily movements of fishing boats. During the annual Chao Pho Lak Mueang Procession Festival, usually held in June, the sacred image is ceremonially placed on a boat and paraded across the Tha Chin River in a grand event. This ritual is considered unique in Thailand and powerfully represents the strong cultural identity and faith of the local community.

For travelers and photographers, the shrine provides a harmonious blend of traditional Chinese artistry and riverside scenery. Sunlight reflecting off glazed tiles, dragon motifs, and architectural details creates striking light and shadow effects, making it ideal for cultural photography. The site is also well suited for those interested in local history and for visitors wishing to explore the lively atmosphere of Maha Chai Market, located just a short distance away.

City Pillar Shrine Samut Sakhon Shrine is therefore not only a place of worship, but also a spiritual center, a historical learning site, and a powerful symbol of faith for the city. Visitors are invited to pay their respects for good fortune and to experience the enduring charm of riverside culture that continues to thrive with spiritual energy to this day.
