“Explore the ruins of the Sukhothai Royal Palace at Phra Ruang Castle Hill, the historic site where 'Stone Inscription No. 1 and the Manangkhasila Asana Throne' were discovered two of the most significant artifacts in Thai history.”

Phra Ruang Castle Hill is a historical site located to the east of Mahathat Temple within the Sukhothai Historical Park. Historians believe that this area was the Royal Palace or the residence of the Kings during the Sukhothai period. The site appears as a large rectangular earth mound, systematically constructed with bricks and laterite. Although the wooden palace buildings have decayed over time, the remaining stone foundations at Phra Ruang Castle Hill demonstrate the greatness of the ancient royal palace.

This site holds immense importance in the Rattanakosin era. In 1833, King Rama IV (while he was still ordained as a monk) visited this site and discovered two major national treasures: Stone Inscription No. 1 (King Ramkhamhaeng’s Inscription) and the Manangkhasila Asana Throne. This throne was used by King Ramkhamhaeng the Great to conduct state business and teach Dhamma to his people. The discovery at Phra Ruang Castle Hill opened the door to the study of early Thai history and the Thai alphabet.

Archaeological excavations have revealed that Phra Ruang Castle Hill had a complex layout, consisting of several buildings and connecting pathways. There was an advanced drainage system and terracotta water pipes, showing the technological progress of that time. Additionally, small ponds were built around the area to provide coolness to the royal residence. This site is not just ruins; it is a reflection of the lifestyle and governance during the Dawn of Happiness era, where the King and the people were closely connected.

Today, Phra Ruang Castle Hill is a beautiful and peaceful open space. Tourists enjoy walking through the area to imagine the palace in the past. The surroundings are filled with trees and green grass. Standing on the ground that was once the center of power for the Sukhothai Kingdom helps visitors feel proud of the foundations of Thai culture that have been passed down for over 700 years.
