“Admire the stunning modern Chaturamuk Chapel with vibrant murals and experience the massive riverside fish park where you can feed thousands of fish from a safe, shaded pier.”

Phra Loi Temple is an ancient temple of great importance in Mueang District, Suphan Buri. It is believed to have been established during the middle U-Thong period, supported by archaeological evidence such as the remains of an old ordination hall, sandstone boundary stones, and other historical artifacts. For centuries, the temple has served as both a religious center and a spiritual anchor for the riverside community.

The name “Phra Loi,” meaning “Floating Buddha,” originates from a local legend. According to the tale, a Buddha image in the Naga-protected posture, carved from white sandstone, was found floating along the Tha Chin River. Villagers jointly retrieved the sacred image from the water and enshrined it in a viharn. The temple was then named after this miraculous event to bring prosperity and good fortune to the community.

The most important object of devotion is the Viharn of Phra Loi, where the legendary floating Buddha image is enshrined. The Buddha image radiates serenity and sacred power. Locals and visitors often come to apply gold leaf and make wishes, believing that those facing hardships or misfortune will have their lives “lifted up” and guided toward better luck and success.

Another prominent structure is the Four-Portico Ordination Hall (Chaturamuk Ubosot), a newly constructed building designed with exquisite craftsmanship. The hall features four projecting porches facing all cardinal directions, reflecting refined contemporary Thai architectural style. Inside, it enshrines Luang Pho To, also known as Phra Phuttha Nawarat Mongkhon, a highly revered Buddha image. The interior walls are adorned with vivid mural paintings depicting scenes from the Buddha’s life, beautifully conveying Buddhist teachings in an accessible and artistic manner.

At the riverside area in front of the temple lies the Fish Sanctuary (Utthayan Matcha), where a large floating platform allows visitors to feed fish up close. The Tha Chin River here is home to a dense population of various freshwater fish species. The surrounding atmosphere is shady and breezy throughout the day, making it an ideal place for relaxation and family activities.

Within the temple grounds, visitors can also find replica displays of Heaven and Hell, created according to Buddhist beliefs. These sculptures and scenes serve as moral lessons, especially for children and young people, encouraging awareness of karma and ethical living.

On weekends, Phra Loi Temple becomes especially lively with a community market, where locals sell traditional foods, homemade desserts, and local products. Occasionally, live music performed by community members adds to the cheerful atmosphere. As a result, Phra Loi Temple is not only a religious site but also a place of leisure and a living reflection of local culture in Suphan Buri.
