“Discover an authentic fishing village lifestyle, famous dried squid products, relax on Malibu Beach’s white sands, and enjoy the vibrant Sunday walking street by the sea”
Ban Chalok Lam is a historic fishing village located at the northernmost part of Koh Phangan. Formerly known as “Daladalam” in Malay, meaning a deep bay, the area perfectly reflects its geography. The bay curves inward, offering natural protection from waves during certain seasons, resulting in calm and crystal-clear waters—though during monsoon periods, strong winds can prevent boats from docking.
One of the village’s most distinctive features is the sight of numerous fishing boats anchored across the bay. During calm weather, around 80–100 boats gather here, creating a lively and colorful atmosphere. The village becomes especially vibrant, with locals setting up food stalls and small shops, giving it the feel of a bustling seaside market both day and night.
Another highlight is Malibu Beach, a beautiful stretch of fine white sand and clear water, lined with uniquely shaped trees that make it a favorite for photography. In the morning, sunlight reflects off the sea, enhancing the vivid blue tones and making it one of the most picturesque spots on the island.
Ban Chalok Lam is also considered a seafood paradise. Visitors can witness traditional methods of preserving seafood, especially the iconic dried squid laid out along the beach. Fresh seafood restaurants serve flavorful local dishes at reasonable prices, and visitors can purchase dried squid and sun-dried yellowtail fish as popular souvenirs.
In addition, the village serves as a gateway for exploration. You can go kayaking around the bay, or hire a longtail boat to reach hidden beaches such as Bottle Beach. Every Sunday, the Chaloklum Walking Street comes alive with local food, desserts, and handmade products, offering a perfect blend of culture and community life.
For travelers seeking a slow-life experience, Ban Chalok Lam offers a peaceful escape where nature, local culture, and authentic coastal living come together beautifully.
