“The best snorkeling spot in the Ang Thong archipelago, featuring diverse coral reefs, abundant schools of fish, emerald-colored seawater, and panoramic limestone mountain views.”

Koh Wao (Koh Wow) is a group of medium-sized limestone islands aligned in a north-south direction, located in the northern part of Mu Ko Ang Thong National Park. It consists of Koh Wao Yai, Koh Wao Noi, and Koh Niao. Koh Wao Yai comprises three small islands close to each other and is about 6 kilometers from Koh Tung Ku and Koh Tung Ka. The terrain features towering and complex limestone cliffs with small bays and rocky outcrops around the island, serving as natural breakwaters, making this area relatively calm and ideal for diving.

Healthy Coral Reef Structure
A key highlight of Koh Wao is the wide shallow coral reef, approximately 20–25 meters wide, that is distributed around the island at an average depth of only 2–6 meters, allowing tourists to easily float and view the coral. The coral reef structure includes both flat and sloping formations towards the deep sea, creating a diversity of marine habitats.

A wide variety of corals can be found, including Table Coral, Staghorn Coral, Brain Coral, Great Star Coral, Boulder Coral, and Grooved Brain Coral, which are indicators of a healthy ecosystem. Additionally, Sea Anemones, Barrel Sponges, and Sea Whips are found, adding dimensions of color and complexity to the underwater world.

Diversity of Marine Life
Koh Wao is home to many schools of fish due to the food sources and shelter provided by the coral reefs, such as Barracuda, Yellowtail, Scad, Clownfish, and Parrotfish, as well as small fish that gather in large schools, creating spectacular views. Most of the fish are quite accustomed to tourists, so they can easily swim close, making it ideal for underwater photography.

Water Conditions and Underwater Visibility
One of Koh Wao's strengths is the high clarity of the seawater, especially during the calm sea season (March – August), when underwater visibility can exceed 10–15 meters. Because the area is far from the coast, there is no sediment runoff, allowing clear visibility of the coral and schools of fish, even from the surface.

Charm of Diving and Tourist Experience
The main activity is Snorkeling along the rocky outcrops and coral reefs that stretch out. The surrounding atmosphere is peaceful, with no buildings or visual distractions, giving the feeling of exploring a pristine natural world.

Koh Wao is often chosen as the starting point for Ang Thong archipelago trips because of its calm, safe, and accessible conditions, making it suitable for acclimatization before traveling to other spots such as Koh Mae Ko and Koh Wua Ta Lap. It is also a place that creates a lasting first impression for many tourists.

Who is it suitable for?

  • Snorkeling beginners → The water is not deep, and the waves are not strong.
  • Underwater photographers → Good light, clear water, and abundant fish.
  • Families → Safe and with moderate activities.
  • Nature lovers → Quiet and not crowded.

Environmental Precautions
Because the ecosystem is fragile, tourists should avoid touching or stepping on the coral and not feed the fish to help preserve the integrity of nature for future generations.
