“Pay respects to the majestic bronze statue of Queen Suriyothai on her war elephant and relax in the expansive park surrounding the "Monkey Cheek" reservoir project.”

Queen Suriyothai Memorial is located within Thung Makham Yong, an area of great historical significance as a former battlefield between the Kingdom of Ayutthaya and the Burmese army. The memorial was constructed to honor and commemorate the heroic sacrifice of Queen Suriyothai, a revered heroine who gave her life in battle to protect her royal consort and the sovereignty of the Thai nation. Today, the surrounding area has been developed as part of the royal initiative project known as the “Monkey Cheek” water management system, serving both as a flood-control reservoir and a historical and natural tourist attraction proudly cherished by the people of Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya.

The memorial is striking and majestic, featuring a bronze statue approximately three times larger than life size. It stands on an artificial island, depicting Queen Suriyothai mounted on an elephant as she rode into battle during the historic elephant warfare. At the base of the monument are bas-relief panels illustrating significant events and her heroic deeds. In addition to its historical importance, the area also functions as a large reservoir, offering wide-open views, natural beauty, and a peaceful atmosphere ideal for relaxation amid nature.

The surrounding environment is calm and refreshing, with cool breezes blowing across the water throughout the day. Visitors can enjoy a well-rounded travel experience that combines historical learning with outdoor recreational activities. Walking and cycling paths extend for several kilometers around the reservoir, making the site popular among health-conscious visitors who also come to enjoy one of Ayutthaya’s most beautiful sunset viewpoints.

For families and photographers, the Queen Suriyothai Memorial and Thung Makham Yong are popular recreational destinations, ideal for picnics or allowing children to play freely in the public park. Photographers are particularly drawn to the scenic angles where the monument’s reflection appears on the calm water surface, especially in the early morning and late afternoon when soft sunlight enhances the monument’s dignity and grandeur. On important royal commemorative occasions, the area is also frequently used as a venue for grand ceremonial events.

Visitors are warmly invited to pay tribute to the great sacrifice and experience the tranquil beauty of this historic field at the Queen Suriyothai Memorial, a place where courage from the past has transformed into peace and natural harmony in the present.
