“Experience the grandeur of the redented twelve-angled pagoda set on a high base, offering a panoramic view of the ancient city amidst a serene and peaceful atmosphere.”

Phu Khao Thong Temple, or the Golden Mount Temple, is a highly valuable historical site located to the northwest of Ayutthaya Island. It possesses a long and significant history closely connected to major events in Thai history. The temple is distinguished by the white Phukhao Thong Chedi, standing approximately 80 meters high in the middle of a vast open field. Its prominent position allows it to be seen from a great distance and makes it a powerful symbol of faith, prosperity, and transformation during the Ayutthaya period.

The temple was originally constructed in the early Ayutthaya era. In 1564, after the first fall of Ayutthaya, King Bayinnaung of Burma ordered the construction of a Mon–Burmese-style stupa on this site as a monument commemorating his victory. Later, when Ayutthaya regained its independence, Thai kings restored and rebuilt the upper portion of the chedi in the traditional Ayutthaya style. This resulted in a remarkable architectural structure that clearly reflects the blending of different cultural influences.

The most distinctive feature of Phu Khao Thong Temple is its hybrid architectural design. The massive lower base follows the Mon–Burmese style, while the upper structure is a twelve-cornered recessed chedi, representing pure Ayutthaya art. Climbing the long staircase leading to the top allows visitors to closely observe the craftsmanship and structural strength of this monument, which has endured for centuries.

The surrounding atmosphere of Phu Khao Thong Temple feels peaceful, open, and refreshing, in contrast to the more crowded temples within the city center. Visitors can ascend the chedi to enjoy panoramic views of rice fields, canals, and nearby ancient stupas. In the late afternoon, when sunlight reflects off the white surface of the chedi, the scenery becomes especially beautiful, serene, and visually striking.

Phu Khao Thong Temple is an ideal destination for history enthusiasts, photographers, artists, and those seeking spiritual tranquility. Beyond its architectural beauty, the site powerfully conveys the story of Ayutthaya’s conflicts, losses, and eventual revival. Standing atop the chedi and gazing across the ancient landscape feels like a journey through time—an unforgettable experience that leaves a lasting impression on every visitor.
