Chaiyo Worawihan Temple, commonly known as “Wat Ket Chaiyo,” is one of the most renowned and significant temples in Ang Thong Province. The temple is deeply connected to the history of Buddhism during the early Rattanakosin period, particularly during the reign of King Mongkut (Rama IV). It was here that Somdet Phra Phutthachan (To Phrommarangsi) of Wat Rakhang Khositaram commissioned the construction of a large Buddha image as a memorial to the place where he once lived and practiced Vipassana meditation in his youth. As a result, the temple became an important spiritual center for Buddhists from across the country.
The most prominent highlight of the temple is Phra Maha Phuttha Phim, widely known as “Luang Pho To,” a massive brick-and-stucco seated Buddha image in the meditation posture, with a lap width_ exceeding 16 meters. The image is enshrined majestically within a grand vihara. Its construction faced many challenges and required a long period to complete, finally being finished during the reign of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V). Continuous restorations have preserved its dignity and beauty as seen today. It is widely believed that those who come to pray to Luang Pho To will receive compassion, inner peace, and success in their careers.
The atmosphere within Chaiyo Worawihan Temple is filled with sacred serenity and deep faith. Located along the bank of the Chao Phraya River, the temple enjoys cool breezes and scenic riverside views throughout the day. Beyond the vihara of Luang Pho To, visitors can also admire the ordination hall adorned with exquisite mural paintings created by traditional royal craftsmen, as well as an old teakwood sermon hall that clearly reflects the refinement and craftsmanship of traditional Thai art.
For devotees who enjoy making merit and collectors of Buddhist amulets, Chaiyo Worawihan Temple is an essential destination, as it is the birthplace of the famous Phra Somdej Ket Chaiyo amulet, highly regarded both nationally and internationally. The orderly layout and well-maintained grounds allow visitors to comfortably explore the architecture and participate in religious activities, while also experiencing the simple lifestyle of the Chao Phraya riverside community.
Visitors are warmly invited to experience the sacred power of Luang Pho To and pay tribute to the revered Somdet Phra Phutthachan (To Phrommarangsi), receiving blessings and spiritual fulfillment at Chaiyo Worawihan Temple, a true gem of faith in Ang Thong Province.
