Nong Prajak Public Park is one of Udon Thani’s most significant historical and cultural landmarks. The lake originally bore the name “Nong Na Kluea,” meaning “Salt Field Lake,” as the area was once known for salt production from natural brine wells. When Prince Prachaksinlapakhom established the city of Udon Thani in 1893, the lake was renamed “Nong Prajak” to honor him as the city’s founder.

In the 1980s, the lake underwent major development under a local government project to create a large, scenic public park dedicated to King Rama IX. The area was dredged and landscaped, transforming it into the largest green space in Udon Thani’s city center. Today, it serves as a beloved recreational park for exercise, relaxation, and community activities.

The park’s atmosphere is serene and lush, with large shade trees surrounding the lake. A 3-kilometer jogging and cycling track encircles the water, making it popular for morning and evening workouts. There are also outdoor exercise areas, children’s playgrounds, and open spaces for community events and festivals.

The small island in the center of the lake is accessible via a wooden bridge and a suspension bridge. It features beautifully landscaped flower gardens, fountains, and a floral clock tower. Visitors can rent paddle boats shaped like ducks to enjoy the lake view from the water — a favorite activity among families and couples.

The park’s signature attraction, the “Giant Yellow Rubber Duck,” was installed in 2013 as part of a tourism campaign. It quickly became an iconic symbol of Udon Thani, drawing both domestic and international tourists who come to take photos with it.

Around the lake, visitors will find cafes, restaurants, and night markets, making it a vibrant social area, especially during weekends. The park also serves as a main venue for major local events such as the Udon Thani Red Cross Fair, New Year celebrations, and marathons, reflecting its role as the city’s social and cultural heart.

• By public transport: Local taxis, tuk-tuks, or songthaews (shared pickup trucks) are readily available within the city to reach the park.

• Best time to visit: Early morning (05:00–08:00) or late afternoon (16:30–19:00) when the weather is cool and the light is ideal for photography.

• Activities: Rent a paddle duck boat for a relaxing ride, stroll across the suspension bridge to the island, or enjoy the sunset by the lakeside. It’s also a great spot for morning exercise or casual evening walks.
