“Revered Luang Pho Phet Chiang Saen-style Buddha image enshrined in a peaceful viharn in central Uttaradit, directly opposite the railway station. Admire Western-style heritage buildings, beautiful temple murals, and a powerful story of faith that brought the Buddha image back to its hometown.”

Viharn Luang Pho Phet Wat Tha Thanon, formerly known as Wat Wang Tao Mo, is located directly opposite the Uttaradit Railway Station. It is an important temple of the city housing Luang Pho Phet, a bronze Buddha image in Chiang Saen Singha One style, in the Maravijaya posture with diamond-cross-legged seating. The Buddha image has a lap width_ of 32 inches and is deeply revered as the sacred protector of Uttaradit.

The temple also features a remarkable Western-style building constructed in 1931, originally used as a Buddhist Pali school for monks and novices. This structure reflects a unique blend of traditional monastic education and Western architectural influence, with symmetrical design, tall windows, and European-style structure rarely seen in provincial temples.

Another highlight is the old ordination hall (ubosot) with mural paintings, recognized as one of the most beautiful examples of temple art in Uttaradit. The murals depict scenes from the Buddha’s life, Jataka tales, and traditional village life, painted in classical techniques that remain remarkably preserved.

In-depth History of Luang Pho Phet
Luang Pho Phet was discovered by Phra Luang Duang of Wat Mon Mai while passing through an abandoned temple site. He noticed an unusually large anthill with a pointed shape. After tapping it, he found the Buddha’s head emerging from the soil. With the help of disciples, he excavated the site and discovered a large bronze Buddha image buried inside, believed to have been hidden in ancient times to protect Buddhism.

The Buddha image was first enshrined at Wat Mon Mai. However, due to the growing number of devotees and limited suitability of the site, it was later moved to Wat Wang Tao Mo (present-day Wat Tha Thanon), which is located in the city center and better equipped to accommodate worshippers.

It was then given the name “Luang Pho Phet”, where “Phet” (diamond) symbolizes preciousness, purity, and sacred power—representing the spiritual jewel of Uttaradit.

Cultural Significance
Wat Tha Thanon serves as a spiritual center of Uttaradit and a key stop for travelers, especially those arriving by train, as the temple is located directly across from the railway station. The peaceful atmosphere makes it ideal for merit-making, prayer, and beginning journeys with auspicious blessings.
