“Be amazed by life-sized, moving, and roaring dinosaur models, and admire the exhibition showcasing real dinosaur skeletons unearthed in the Phu Wiang Valley, such as Phuwiangosaurus sirindhornae.”

The Phu Wiang Dinosaur Museum is situated within the unique geological structure of the Phu Wiang Basin, a natural horseshoe-shaped "cuesta" formed by millions of years of tectonic uplift and erosion. This area serves as a premier paleontological treasure trove for Thailand. Official excavations began in 1976 after the serendipitous discovery of a fossilized bone at the Huai Pratu Ti Ma site. Since then, geologists and paleontologists have identified over nine major excavation sites scattered across the Phu Wiang National Park, leading to the establishment of this world-class facility to preserve and study the Mesozoic Era's history.

The museum’s exhibition space is strategically divided into five educational zones:

  • Zone 1: Origin of the Universe and Evolution: This section details the Big Bang theory, the formation of the solar system, and the early evolution of life forms. It also illustrates the tectonic shifts of the supercontinent Pangea and how these movements shaped the current Asian landmass.

  • Zone 2: Dinosaurs in Thailand: The centerpiece of the museum, featuring authentic fossils found in the Sao Khua Formation. It highlights the four "type species" uniquely identified in Phu Wiang: Phuwiangosaurus sirindhornae (a massive titanosaurian sauropod), Siamotyrannus isanensis (a powerful carnivorous theropod), Siamosaurus suteethorni (a crocodile-like spinosaurid specialized in hunting fish), and Kinnareemimus khonkaenensis (a primitive ostrich-like ornithomimosaur).

  • Zone 3: Paleontological Laboratory: Visitors are granted a behind-the-scenes look at the rigorous scientific process. This includes the delicate extraction of fossils from rock matrices, cleaning, and the application of chemical consolidants to preserve these ancient relics for future study.

  • Zone 4: Dinosaur Park: An immersive prehistoric outdoor park featuring life-sized animatronic dinosaurs. These replicas utilize advanced mechanical systems to move and roar within a reconstructed ancient habitat, providing an engaging experience for families and students.

  • Zone 5: Royal Tribute Exhibition: This hall honors the significant contributions of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, whose enduring patronage and personal interest in Thai paleontology have been vital to the growth of scientific research in the kingdom.

Beyond the indoor galleries, the museum offers access to nature trails leading to actual excavation pits, such as Site 1 and Site 9, where visitors can view in situ fossils embedded in the rock layers. This integration of a modern research facility with preserved archaeological sites makes the Phu Wiang Dinosaur Museum a globally significant institution for earth sciences.
