“A central city park featuring the landmark “Royal Candle Sculpture” and hosting major local religious festivals.”

Thung Si Mueang is a large public park located in the heart of Ubon Ratchathani city. It is one of the most important sites that carry historical, cultural, and spiritual significance for the local people.

Historically, this area was once the royal rice fields of the local ruler and was used for important ceremonies, including royal funerals performed in the traditional “Nok Hasdiling” style, an ancient Isan ritual. Later, the area was transformed into a public park for community use.

The park is surrounded by moats and has four entrances named after local rulers and nobles: Sri Narong Gate, Sri Thavaravadi Gate, Sri Viengchan Gate, and Sri Thammarat Gate, reflecting historical ties and religious beliefs.

A key highlight of Thung Si Mueang is the “Royal Candle Sculpture,” a large carved candle monument created in 1987 to celebrate the 60th birthday of His Majesty King Rama IX. This sculpture is renowned for its intricate craftsmanship, artistic design, and symbolic representation of loyalty and devotion by the people of Ubon Ratchathani.

Thung Si Mueang is also the focal point of important festivals, especially the annual Candle Festival held during Buddhist Lent (Khao Phansa). The festival features elaborate candle parades, beautifully decorated floats, traditional dancers, and performers representing various districts in the province, attracting both local and international tourists.

Besides being a festival venue, the park serves as a place for relaxation, morning exercises, local music performances, community markets, and celebrations of important national and regional events.

This place is suitable for all ages—from families seeking green space, students learning history, photographers capturing Isan traditions, to tourists wishing to experience local culture firsthand.

Visiting Thung Si Mueang to stroll, photograph the Royal Candle Sculpture, or enjoy the lively atmosphere at dusk offers a deep insight into the heart of Ubon Ratchathani.
