“Wat Chaeng features a traditional Isan-style ordination hall (sim), built in 1888 by Chao Ratchabut. It showcases intricate wood carvings of honeycomb patterns, finials, and a rare crocodile-shaped staircase.”

Wat Chaeng is a private Buddhist temple affiliated with the Mahanikaya sect, founded in 1888 (B.E. 2431) by Chao Ratchabut (Nu Kham) during the reign of King Rama V. Located on Sapphasit Road in central Ubon Ratchathani, the temple's name, “Chaeng,” which means "radiance" or "illumination," reflects its role as a guiding landmark for the local community.

The ordination hall (sim) is a fine example of ancient Isan architecture, measuring approximately 6 × 15 × 10 meters, and faces east. Its interior and exterior are richly adorned with delicate wood carvings, including honeycomb patterns, naga motifs, finials, and decorative gables—representing a blend of Lan Xang and local Isan art. The intricate wooden gable contrasts sharply with the more modern temple styles.

These carvings are considered cultural treasures, representing rare and traditional craftsmanship. Wat Chaeng has received a conservation excellence award and has been registered as a historical site by the Fine Arts Department since 1984 (B.E. 2527).

Beyond its architectural beauty, the temple remains a spiritual hub for local ceremonies, including Songkran and the End of Buddhist Lent. It also serves as a learning center for monks and the community, making it significant both religiously and culturally.

Visitors are drawn to the serene atmosphere, unique regional architecture, and the warm local community that preserves its heritage with pride.
