“Phra That Nong Sam Muen features a rare and beautiful architectural style, harmoniously blending Lanna, Lan Chang, and Ayutthaya art in a well-balanced composition.”

Phra That Nong Sam Muen, located within Wat Phra That Nong Sam Muen, is a major spiritual center of the Phu Khiao community and is considered an important historical site of Chaiyaphum Province. It clearly reflects the cultural blending of upper Northeastern Thailand (Isan), especially in its religious and artistic traditions.Local scholars believe that the stupa was developed around the 21st–22nd Buddhist centuries, a period when the influences of Lan Chang, Lanna, and Ayutthaya cultures became prominent in the Chi River basin region. The name “Nong Sam Muen” is believed to originate from local legends. One belief suggests that the area was once a large wetland capable of accommodating tens of thousands of people or even military forces, which led to the term “Sam Muen” (thirty thousand). Another interpretation views it as a symbolic reference to the area’s historical fertility and its role as a major ancient community hub. Although there is no definitive historical documentation, the name itself reflects the importance of the area in the past.

The stupa stands approximately 45 meters tall and features architectural styles influenced by multiple eras. Its base is designed in the twelve-indented corners style, commonly found in Ayutthaya architecture, while the upper structure resembles Phra That Phanom, a major sacred stupa of the northeastern region. The stucco decorations also blend Lan Chang and Lanna artistic elements in a harmonious composition.Around the base of the stupa are Buddha images enshrined in all four cardinal directions, symbolizing Buddhist cosmology with Mount Meru at the center surrounded by the four continents. In terms of belief, Phra That Nong Sam Muen is regarded as a highly sacred site. Locals believe that paying respect or walking clockwise around the stupa brings blessings, prosperity, peace, and stability in life. It is also associated with faith in the Buddha’s relics, although no official evidence has been publicly confirmed.

The surrounding area is quiet and rural, surrounded by rice fields and traditional communities, making it suitable for meditation and peaceful retreat. It also serves as a cultural center for local activities.Every year during the full moon of the fifth lunar month, the Stupa Bathing Festival is held, which is an important merit-making event for people from Phu Khiao and nearby provinces. The festival includes ritual bathing of the stupa, cloth processions, traditional performances, and local markets, reflecting the rich Isan cultural identity.Overall, Phra That Nong Sam Muen is not only a historical monument but also a spiritual, artistic, and cultural center that has long been the heart of the local community and continues to preserve its deep-rooted faith to this day.
