“Phra Phuttha Chaiyaphum Phithak on the cliff, Phageung crescent-shaped viewpoint, sea of mist and sunset views, and a local museum”

Phageung Cliff (Wat Chaiyaphum Phithak) is located on the Phu Laen Kha mountain range in Nong Bua Daeng District, Chaiyaphum Province. It is both a natural tourist attraction and an important sacred site, featuring a distinctive crescent-shaped cliff, which is the origin of the Isan word “Keng,” meaning moon. The area is part of an ancient sandstone mountain range shaped by long-term wind and rain erosion, forming dramatic cliffs and ridges surrounded by relatively rich mixed deciduous forest. This landscape offers panoramic views of valleys and the Nong Bua Daeng lowlands.Wat Chaiyaphum Phithak serves as the spiritual center of the area. It was originally a forest meditation site for monks before being developed into a temple and home to the large Phra Phuttha Chaiyaphum Phithak Buddha statue, which stands prominently on the cliff and serves as a focal point for local faith and visitors.

From the main viewpoint near the Buddha statue, visitors can see layered mountain ranges and forest landscapes below. In the early morning, mist often forms over the valley, while in the evening the sunset over the mountains creates a scenic panorama. The surrounding ecosystem is a mixed forest with species such as teak, dipterocarp trees, native plants, small wildlife, and various birds. The climate is generally cooler than the lowlands, especially in the early morning and winter season. The site is approximately 36 kilometers from Chaiyaphum city via Highway 2159 (Chaiyaphum–Nong Bua Daeng route). The road is a winding mountain route, and the atmosphere becomes noticeably cooler and quieter as visitors approach the temple.

The best time to visit is 05:30–07:00 for sea of mist and sunrise views, and 16:30–18:00 for sunset views. Mist is most likely during the late rainy season to early winter. As it is a sacred place, visitors are advised to dress modestly, avoid loud noise, and exercise caution near cliff edges where some areas are unfenced.Overall, Phageung Cliff combines natural beauty, spiritual significance, and scenic viewpoints, making it ideal for sightseeing, photography, relaxation, and meditation.
