Mueang Phaniat Ancient Site is located at the foot of Khao Sarapab, near Wat Thong Thua. It boasts a history spanning over 1,300 years and is believed to be the original location of Chanthaburi City. The city was heavily influenced by the ancient Khmer Empire. The city plan is a large rectangular shape, approximately 1 km wide and 2 km long, with remaining traces of laterite walls, moats, and ancient reservoirs (Baray). It serves as an archaeological site reflecting early settlement and trade connections in the past.

The most significant evidence discovered at Mueang Phaniat includes ancient Khmer inscriptions and crucial religious artifacts, such as a lintel in the ancient Khmer Thalaborivat art style, which is extremely old. Most of these artifacts are exhibited and preserved at the Mueang Phaniat Archaeological Museum at Wat Thong Thua, located nearby. This allows tourists and enthusiasts to clearly study the historical narratives and cultural artistry of this ancient city.

• Private Car: From Chanthaburi city center, take Sukhumvit Road heading towards Tha Mai District for about 3-4 kilometers. Then, turn right into Phaniat Village and Wat Thong Thua. The ancient site is located near the temple.

• Hired Vehicle: You can take public transport to Chanthaburi city center, then take a motorcycle taxi or a Songthaew (local pickup truck taxi) to Wat Thong Thua.

• Best Time to Visit: Can be visited year-round, but mornings or late afternoons are cooler

• Attire: It is advisable to prepare a hat or umbrella as the area is outdoors, and wear comfortable walking shoes suitable for exploration.

• Learning: You should also visit the Mueang Phaniat Archaeological Museum at Wat Thong Thua to see the important artifacts discovered in the area.
