“It's a mat with a lot of stickiness and durability.”

Bang Sa Kao Krajood Mat Weaving Center is an old community situated along the Chanthaburi River, close to the sea, which boasts fertile land for cultivating the Krajood (Sedge) plant, the main raw material for the handicraft. This community has inherited the unique mat-weaving techniques from the Vietnamese ancestors who settled in the area over 200 years ago. The villagers still use traditional methods, from harvesting and flattening the sedge to natural dyeing processes, resulting in mats that are tough, durable, and distinctly rustic in feel.

The heart of the handicraft here lies in the exquisite patterns and unique colors. The villagers have created new patterns while preserving traditional ones, such as Mudmee (Ikat), Dok Kaew (Glass Flower), and Kret Tao (Turtle Scale) patterns. Currently, the community groups have worked together to diversify the products to meet market demands, transforming the traditional mats into a variety of interesting items such as handbags, hats, shoes, storage boxes, and placemat sets, which are sought after by both domestic and international markets.
