“The park features the 10-meter-tall Peace Statue, Fountain of Peace, international Peace Symbol Zone, and Hypocenter Park, commemorating the victims and promoting global peace.”
Nagasaki Peace Park is divided into two main areas: the original Peace Park and the adjacent Hypocenter Park, with the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum nearby.
-
Peace Statue: Sculpted by Seibo Kitamura, the 10-meter-tall bronze statue has its right hand pointing upward to represent the threat of nuclear weapons, left hand extended for eternal peace, and closed eyes offering prayers for the victims. Its right leg is folded while the left is extended, symbolizing meditation and readiness to stand up for the world.
-
Fountain of Peace: Located at the south end of the park, this fountain commemorates those who died of thirst after the bombing. A poem by a nine-year-old survivor describing the suffering is engraved on a black plate nearby.
-
Peace Symbol Zone: A collection of statues and monuments donated by countries and organizations worldwide, conveying goodwill and shared hope for peace.
-
Hypocenter Park: Marks the exact point above which the atomic bomb detonated. A simple black stone pillar indicates the hypocenter, and remnants of Urakami Cathedral destroyed in the blast can be seen nearby.
-
Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum and Memorial Hall: Educates visitors on the devastation, the victims, and the history of nuclear weapons. The National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims is an underground structure for quiet reflection and remembrance.
