“One of Japan's oldest temples, famous for its hidden Amida Buddha, grand Hondō hall, and the mysterious Okaidan Meguri tunnel experience.”

Zenkōji Temple, founded around 642 AD, is one of Japan’s oldest and most important Buddhist temples. It is non-denominational, welcoming pilgrims and visitors from all sects, social classes, and genders. Its inclusive approach to spirituality makes it unique among Japanese temples.

The temple houses the Ikko Sanzon Amida Nyorai, a secret Buddha statue (Hibutsu), considered the first Buddha brought to Japan. This sacred figure is never shown publicly; instead, a carefully crafted replica is displayed every six years during the Gokaichō ceremony, drawing pilgrims from across the country.

The main hall (Hondō), rebuilt in 1707, is a large wooden structure from the Edo period and a designated National Treasure. Beneath the Hondō lies the Okaidan Meguri, a completely dark underground tunnel where visitors can seek the "Key to Paradise," believed to grant enlightenment and blessings from Amida Buddha.

The temple grounds are marked by impressive gates: the Sanmon Gate, built in 1750, and the Niomon Gate, guarded by imposing Niō statues that protect the sacred space. Another significant feature is the Peace Bell, cast in the temple and gifted to the United Nations in 1968, now installed at the UN Headquarters in New York as a symbol of Japan's commitment to global peace.

Zenkōji is not only a center of Buddhist spirituality but also a historic, architectural, and cultural landmark. Visitors can experience centuries of Japanese history, explore spiritual practices, and witness iconic structures that symbolize harmony, peace, and inclusivity.
