“Home to Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University and an important center for Theravāda Buddhist education and meditation.”
Wat Mahathat Yuwaratrangsarit Ratchaworamahawihan, often referred to as Wat Mahathat, is a prestigious royal temple located near Sanam Luang, opposite Thammasat University and close to the Grand Palace. Its origins trace back to the Ayutthaya period, making it one of the oldest temples in Bangkok. The temple was renovated and elevated in royal status by King Rama V and continues to play a significant role in Thai Buddhism.
The temple is best known today for housing Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University (MCU) — the largest public Buddhist university in Thailand. It serves as a hub for monks, scholars, and laypeople from around the world who come to study Pali, Buddhist philosophy, and meditation.
Wat Mahathat also serves as a spiritual refuge in the heart of the bustling city. Its tranquil grounds, traditional Thai architecture, and sacred ordination hall provide an ideal environment for mindfulness practice and religious ceremonies.
