“The vihara houses the 28 Buddha Statues, replicas of significant Buddha images from across Thailand, uniquely gathered in one place, making it a remarkable and distinctive feature of Lanna culture.”
Wat Boongert - Luang Pu Kam is an ancient temple located in the heart of Dok Kham Tai town, established around 1900 (B.E. 2443). It holds great importance for the local people of Dok Kham Tai and the province of Phayao.
28 Buddha Statues: The temple’s main highlight is the vihara, built to enshrine the 28 Buddha Statues, replicas of important Buddha images from temples nationwide. The principal Buddha, Phra Tan Hang, is a replica of Phra Chinnarat with a 1.5-meter-wide lap. Phra Tan Hang represents the Buddha of the current age and is intricately carved and gilded. Surrounding it are 27 other Buddha statues representing Buddhas from past kalpas. The vihara and all statues are meticulously maintained, allowing visitors to experience tranquility, sacredness, and the exquisite beauty of ancient Lanna art.
Luang Pu Kam: The temple is closely associated with Phra Ratchamongkol Wisut (Luang Pu Kam), a renowned Lanna master monk who lived to 103 years old and served as the abbot of Wat Boongert from 1947 (B.E. 2490). He was a respected teacher and developer, supporting the establishment of several schools. Even after his passing, his legacy and contributions remain at the temple.
Architecture: The temple’s ordination hall was built in 1926 (B.E. 2469) in traditional Lanna Thai style using ironwood pillars and wooden roofs. The intricate carvings on the pillars and gables showcase local craftsmanship. The Buddha images are arranged to allow visitors to walk around closely, offering a serene and sacred experience.
