“ A century-old wooden market along Samrong Canal, filled with local food, traditional community life, and a charming nostalgic atmosphere. ”

Bang Phli Ancient Market, formerly known as “Siri Sophon Market,” is a historic waterfront trading community along Samrong Canal with a history spanning more than 160 years. The market was established by Thai and Chinese settlers who used the canal as a major transportation route connecting Thailand’s eastern coastal areas to Bangkok. In the past, the area was bustling with trading boats carrying seafood, rice, spices, and local products, making Bang Phli an important commercial hub of Samut Prakan before modern roads became the primary mode of transportation. One of the market’s most distinctive features is its long row of two-story wooden shophouses stretching over 500 meters along the canal. Many buildings still preserve their original architecture, including wooden shutters, vintage windows, ventilation panels, and traditional shop signs, reflecting the authentic riverside lifestyle of the past. Inside the market are long-established family-run businesses such as traditional medicine shops, old-style coffee houses, Thai dessert stalls, and handicraft stores.

The market is directly connected to Wat Bang Phli Yai Nai, home to the revered “Luang Pho To,” a sacred Buddha image highly respected by local residents. This makes the area both a cultural attraction and an important spiritual center. Many visitors come to pay respect, make merit, and explore the market in the same trip.Today, Bang Phli Ancient Market still maintains its simple and authentic atmosphere, unlike many modern commercial floating markets. Local residents continue to live and work here, preserving the traditional way of life. Visitors can truly experience the charm of a historic canal-side community, enjoy traditional local cuisine, and immerse themselves in a nostalgic atmosphere rarely found so close to Bangkok.
