“A peaceful pine-shaded beach with calm waters. Located near the airport, it is Phuket’s premier spot for stunning close-up photos of aircraft landing over the ocean.”
Nai Yang Beach, located within Sirinat National Park on the northwest coast of Phuket Province, is considered one of the most pristine beaches in Phuket compared to other famous beaches. The beach stretches approximately 2.5–3 kilometers, with medium-to-coarse sand that is yellowish-white and gently sloping, making it ideal for walks and beach activities. A long line of casuarina trees provides natural shade, perfect for relaxation, picnics, and family activities – a key characteristic that distinguishes Nai Yang Beach from other Phuket beaches which tend to be more open and sunny.
Geographically, Nai Yang Beach is part of a small, open bay with shallow coral reefs and some underwater rocks scattered in front of the beach. These help to mitigate wave action at times, resulting in calm and clear waters during the peak tourist season (approximately November to April), suitable for swimming, floating, and light marine activities such as snorkeling in suitable areas. However, during the southwest monsoon season (approximately May to October), the waves and winds become significantly stronger due to the prevailing weather patterns of the Andaman Sea. Therefore, extra caution is advised when swimming, and park officials should strictly follow their instructions.
In the past, Nai Yang Beach and nearby coastlines were nesting grounds for sea turtles, especially leatherback turtles, a rare species. While nesting has significantly decreased due to human activities and environmental changes, relevant agencies continue conservation and monitoring projects to restore the coastal ecosystem. Furthermore, the area surrounding the beach retains a high degree of biodiversity, including coastal plants, small marine animals, and a relatively intact mangrove forest ecosystem compared to densely developed tourist areas.
The overall atmosphere of Nai Yang Beach is peaceful and welcoming, ideal for tourists seeking to avoid crowds. Despite being only a few kilometers from Phuket International Airport, the beach area remains undeveloped commercially compared to other major beaches in Phuket. The surrounding area features small local restaurants and resorts and bungalows emphasizing tranquility. Tourists can experience the local community's way of life firsthand, especially in the evenings when locals relax, dine, and spend time with their families under the pine trees by the sea.
Another highlight that makes Nai Yang Beach popular is its proximity to an area for watching planes land. Visitors can walk along the beach to the nearby Mai Khao Beach to witness large aircraft flying low over the beach before landing at certain times, especially during favorable wind conditions. Although the main viewpoint is Mai Khao Beach, Nai Yang Beach is a more convenient and relaxed starting point, making it ideal for planning a combined trip that combines seaside relaxation, experiencing nature, and capturing unique Phuket photos.
