“Pay respect to the Giant Silver Buddha and the 21-meter Reclining Guan Yin, explore a riverside Mahayana temple on the Tha Chin River, and enjoy herbal foot soaking and merit-making rituals for health and blessings”

Wat Thammapanyaram Bangmuang also known as “Heng Seng Yi Shrine” is the only Mahayana (Vietnamese Annam Nikaya) Buddhist temple in Nakhon Pathom Province. Located along the Tha Chin River, it is surrounded by orchards and a long-established Chinese-Thai community in Sam Phran District. The site originally began as “Heng Seng Tu Joss House,” founded over 100 years ago as a spiritual center for Chinese immigrants settling in the Tha Chin River basin. It was officially upgraded to a Buddhist temple in 2005. The temple’s architecture beautifully blends Chinese and Thai styles, featuring dragon motifs, red lanterns, and intricate wood carvings typical of Mahayana Chinese temples, while still maintaining a serene Thai temple atmosphere. This combination creates a calm, solemn, and sacred environment distinct from most temples in central Thailand.

The most important highlight is the “Bhaisajyaguru Buddha” or “Giant Silver Buddha,” regarded as the first and largest silver-toned principal Buddha statue in Thailand. In Mahayana belief, Bhaisajyaguru is the Buddha of healing, and devotees come to pray for good health, recovery from illness, and inner peace, especially for themselves or ill family members.Another major attraction is the 21-meter-long “Reclining Guan Yin Bodhisattva,” a golden statue representing compassion and mercy. It is considered one of the largest reclining Guan Yin statues in Thailand. Worshippers often come to pray for relief from suffering, emotional healing, and family harmony.

Inside the temple is also the “Paegong Shrine,” a traditional spiritual guardian worshipped by locals for prosperity, career success, and protection. In addition, sacred Buddha relics from India are enshrined for visitors to pay respect and gain blessings. What makes the temple unique is its holistic concept of caring for both body and mind. Visitors can enjoy herbal foot soaking, traditional massage, merit-making rituals based on birth month, and feeding thousands of carp along the Tha Chin River, creating a relaxing atmosphere ideal for escaping urban stress.During major Chinese-Thai festivals such as Chinese New Year, Ghost Festival, and Vegetarian Festival, the temple becomes especially lively with Mahayana chanting ceremonies, purification rituals, and vegetarian food offerings. As a result, Wat Thammapanyaram Bangmuang is not only a religious site but also a living cultural hub of Chinese heritage along the Tha Chin River, continuing to thrive with faith and tradition to this day.
