“The Prasat-style pagoda is built of brick without mortar, featuring a square (Cross Plan) layout with projections on all 4 sides, a twelve-indent base, and niches that once housed Buddha images in the Maravijaya posture. The patterns show Cham–Javanese art, and the atmosphere is serene and peaceful, perfect for historical viewing and photography.”

Wat Kaeo (Wat Kaeo), or Wat Rattana Ram, is an important ancient site in Chaiya city, Surat Thani province. It is presumed to have been built during the 14th–15th centuries Buddhist Era in the era of the Srivijaya Kingdom, which was a trade and religious center connecting the Malay Peninsula with Southeast Asia.

The main ancient structure is the “Wat Kaeo Pagoda,” a Srivijaya art Prasat-style pagoda, constructed with brick without mortar, in a square (Cross Plan) layout, with projections on all 4 sides and a base with a twelve-indent design, reflecting a high level of ancient architectural expertise.

Inside each side is a niche that once housed Buddha images in the Maravijaya posture, especially on the eastern side, where traces of a red sandstone Buddha image remain, indicating the faith and fusion of Buddhism in the Srivijaya era.

The construction technique used is close-fitting brickwork without mortar, a rare ancient craftsmanship to be seen today.

Even though the pagoda is damaged, the main structure, base, and niches can still be seen clearly. The Fine Arts Department carried out excavation and restoration between 1976–1979 B.E. to preserve this ancient site.

Currently, Wat Kaeo is an important historical and archaeological learning resource, ideal for those interested in Srivijaya art and the civilization route of the Thai–Malay Peninsula.
