“Be amazed by two thousand rare seashell species, featuring the world’s largest golden pearl, ancient hundred-million-year-old fossils, and massive giant clams weighing over two hundred kilograms.”

The Phuket Seashell Museum is far more than a standard tourist attraction; it stands as a premier regional center for Conchological studies. Founded upon over 40 years of dedicated effort by the Patamakanthin family, specifically Mr. Somchai Patamakanthin—a world-renowned shell collector—the museum houses a collection curated through extensive global travels. The facility is strategically designed with its primary exhibition space located underground to provide a climate-controlled environment, essential for preserving the delicate colors and textures of specimens that vary in age and fragility.

The interior exhibition showcases a staggering collection of over 2,000 species, with a primary focus on shells from Thai waters and the Indian Ocean. The specimens are systematically categorized according to scientific principles, offering a deep dive into their biological cycles and rare physical attributes. The absolute highlight of the museum is the "Golden Pearl," recognized as one of the largest natural golden pearls in existence, weighing 140 carats. Furthermore, visitors can witness ancient shell fossils dating back over 380 million years, providing crucial evidence of the Earth's geological evolution. The collection also features remarkably preserved Nautilus shells, which are considered some of the finest examples of their kind.

Beyond scientific value, the museum highlights the natural artistry found in the ocean, most notably through the display of a massive Giant Clam weighing over 250 kilograms. Every exhibit is accompanied by detailed descriptions in both Thai and English, making it an invaluable educational resource for students, researchers, and nature enthusiasts. This comprehensive approach allows visitors to appreciate the intricate connection between marine biology and natural history. The journey concludes at the curated gift shop, which offers high-quality shell crafts and fine pearl jewelry, ensuring that the wonder of the museum stays with visitors long after they leave.
