“Chanthaburi Cultural Center It is the residence of Queen Rambhai Barni in the reign of King Rama VII.”
Chanthaburi Cultural Center was originally the Grey Mansion in Wang Suan Ban Kaeo, which was the residence of Her Majesty Queen Rambhai Barni for 21 years after the death of King Prajadhipok. From the Grey Mansion, a stepped brick walkway leads to two buildings at the back, lined with ornamental trees and plants, shaded and beautiful, with a nursery
Rambhai Barni Rajabhat University has preserved the royal residence and established a museum within the building, which collects various items, including personal belongings and examples of woven fabric patterns that were produced, for display as a legacy. Later, it was established as the Chanthaburi Cultural Centre.
Biography: Queen Ramphaiphanni, Queen Consort of King Rama VII, chose Chanthaburi Province as a retreat for relaxation after returning to Thailand following the death of King Rama VII. When 725 rai of land in Krai Ya Subdistrict was donated, she built the Ban Kaew Garden Palace, featuring two wooden houses called the Green House and the Red House. Three years later, she constructed the grand teakwood building, the Grey Palace. She first stayed at the Grey Palace on 30 June 1950, while the Green House served as accommodation for the royal secretary and the Red House for the attending officials.
Her Majesty Queen Ramphaiphanni also initiated the cultivation of rice, peanuts, and various fruits and established a mat-weaving workshop to improve the quality of local handicrafts so that they could become a supplementary occupation. She also raised chickens, cows, and cultivated flowers for sale, with all products bearing the "SBK" mark, abbreviated from Wang Suan Ban Kaew.
He resided at the Grey Palace for 18 years before returning to reside at the Sukhothai Palace in Bangkok in 1968. Later in 1972, he donated Ban Kaew Garden Palace to the Ministry of Education to establish the Rumpai Pannee Teacher Training College, which was later renamed Rumpai Pannee Rajabhat Institute and Rumpai Pannee Rajabhat University as it is today
